Equilibrium of forces 1 - Principle of moment

Equilibrium of forces

  • Principle of moment
  • Conditions for equilibrium of rigid bodies under the action of parallel and non-parallel force

By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
  • distinguish between resultant and equilibrant;
  • explain the concept of equilibrium and distinguish between static and dynamic equilibrium;
  • explain the conditions that must be satisfied if an object is to be kept in equilibrium by action of non-parallel forces;
  • explain what is meant by the moment of a force about a point;
  • take moments of a given force about any point and show their direction;
  • explain the conditions that must be satisfied if a body is to be kept in equilibrium by the action of parallel forces.
